Thanksgiving can be a time to reconnect with what we watched, wore, and listened to in the past. (Especially those in their childhood bedrooms this weekend.) Today we asked six questions. Atlantic Writers and editors to answer the question: What trends would you like to see return? And the trend you want to disappear?
return: The most elegant design for a hardback book is when the front cover contains only text—in a very dramatic font—and the back cover has a giant photograph of the author. This trend has continued well into at least 20 years. I’m talking about a Magnificent edition Nabokov’s speak memories (1966) at first edition of John Le Carreis Military spy Tinker Tailor (1974), at first edition Don DeLillo’s white noise (1985) immediately recognized E.B. White (1977) and Joan Didion (1979) Patty Hearst’s essay collection. memory (1982)! A few pictures from today and flower design (or whatever) too humble
go out: You order a glass of wine so that you can hold the wine glass. And that’s why you’re willing to pay $15 for a glass of wine poured from a $15 bottle, because you’re sitting in a restaurant holding a wine glass and feeling luxurious. Sadly, the most hip and modern wine bar Wine is now served in juice glasses (for children) or otherwise. A stiff and inelegant ship Inspired by “tavern” glassware and why? Because it looks less pretentious? I can’t boast at home!

return: My parents disconnected the home phone. But that phone number stayed in my mind along with other home phone numbers. of my childhood friend I recently learned that my internet service provider offers free home phone service. And my apartment has many rooms. All I had to do was plug the phone into the jack. It was a peaceful thought: Go home, put my cell phone—and all distractions—away. But it is not disconnected. I can still talk aimlessly with my sister while doing housework or chatting with friends remotely. I’m all for bringing back the landline to create a channel big enough for the outside world to reach me.
go out: Body measurements through fitness trackers can be useful as they show your activity level or other health markers. But I’m ready to release the sleep score. see Negative scores can make you feel more tired. (no matter how you sleep) or lead to orthosomnia Or the obsession with “perfect” sleep. I’m also worried about what philosopher Xi Thi Nguyen phone We “capture value” when we take simple indicators as our goals. Often this is because technology has given us those things. I used to struggle with my sleep. And deal with it by giving yourself more time to rest. deal with anxiety and conflict with payment less attention Whether I got an A in my sleep or not. The last thing I want to see after a great night is a number telling me how badly I slept. I promise, I know.

return: It happened to me: I wear transition lenses. It was 2009 and I was living in Washington, D.C., the global capital of unfashion. I let the optometrist convince me that I could save money if I bought glasses that doubled as sunglasses. Because of this, after five minutes inside or outside, I see the world through a vague gray veil. It was an inappropriate choice even by DC standards. Friends questioned my decision. The second day is rare. But when looking back It embodies something real: both pragmatism and a proud disregard for good taste.
It’s time we embrace fashion again for a practical purpose. Cargo shorts Thank God, it’s back. What can match the joy of walking down the sidewalk without a bag with things like your phone, wallet, tissues, Advil, sunscreen, water bottle, loose fruit, paperback novel—at your fingertips? (Moreover Wicked clothing now connotes rebellion.) Waist bags went from a funny trend to a respectable piece of clothing. And walking is nice. But have you tried gracefully gliding across the city yet? This is why God invented Heelys.
go out: One more time The utilitarian fad has taken a dark turn. The first time I saw the Apple Watch, I wondered, who would want to be bothered by text messages 24/7? I was wrong about what my fellow man wanted. But I stand by my principles. Digital clothes are the opposite of analogue: they invade our mental space in the name of convenience. They give the illusion of control while controlling the user in reality. There’s a slippery slope from the Apple Watch and Meta glasses to AirPods that push conversation threads into your ears and beanie hats that scan your brain waves. Too much pragmatism turns us all into tools.

return: I want something called The “cosmopolitan village coffee shop” style of the late 1980s and early 2000s revived the style in part as a response to the rapid growth of early technology. and evoking a vaguely bohemian warmth, Global Village Coffeehouse conjures up an understated global culture and doesn’t refer to a specific location. It’s perfect because it’s flawed. Design – commonly found in second wave The coffee shop, although chaotic and surrounded by chaos, But there is an internal logic: controlled chaos unlike Scandinavian modern minimalism and mid-century modernism. The interior of Global Village Coffeehouse is inclusive and not intimidating. And it doesn’t take particularly good photos. That’s the point. no Have an experience that can later be conveyed through images in the app. It’s about getting the experience and walking away feeling good.
go out: Posting on LinkedIn is eternally confusing. And it needs to stop. In the way that TikTok turns humans into puppets while puppets make them perform endless viral dances, LinkedIn has turned people I like into unrecognizable entities. Totally: People who post about their passion for “Find unique solutions to overcome obstacles in developing brand strategy ” I suspect that LinkedIn posters I know personally aren’t really passionate about these things. Because they never happen in real life conversations. This is not good for the soul. It’s not good for my soul to see someone I know become like this. And it’s not good for your soul to be forced to say publicly that you love something you really don’t.

return: An album, especially an album released by a legendary jazz company. blue noteUsed to present an essay printed on the back of a sleeve. Usually written by a knowledgeable music critic or stager. These articles may contain explanations. stimulate the mood and sometimes mysterious The shipment that accompanied the release of Wayne Shorter in 1966 speak no evilFor example, link the tenor saxophonist with Edgar Allen Poe in two sentences. These recordings are informative introductions to the songs. But it also contextualizes the stylistic influences and artistic development of the musicians. In a time when recording is atomized into tracks selected by algorithms and stan culture promotes artists as the shrine of perfection. It is important to remember that music is a craft produced by wandering, committed souls in a room with others.
go out: Until recently The sky is one of the few precious parts of the world that the internet cannot reach us. Now when clicking some buttons (Although it demands a ransom.) The dark plane turns into a Steampunk arcade game with a glowing screen.
crazy! Humans’ ability to fly continuously was once so miraculous that the appearance of the first hot air balloon caused it. “balloonomania” across Europe, as it should be We’re now so desensitized to the physicality between cities that we need TikTok, Netflix, and email to keep our attention spans high. But without Wi-Fi, we could just talk to strangers. Read good magazines or a bad book Or just look out the window and enjoy some good old fashioned contemplation. Back in the day, nothing on our phones or laptops felt as beautiful as being in the air.
