During a press conference on Monday evening The Herndon Police Department announced that Denis Humberto Naverrette Romero, 31, has been charged with kidnapping with intent to defile and rape of a stranger he captured off the trail.

“I would like to start by saying that I am extremely saddened and extremely angry that a crime like this could occur here in Herndon,” said Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard.

“This is the only stranger rape we have ever had in this city in more than 12 years as police chief,” Debord continued.

Just before 9:00 p.m. on Monday, DeBoard said officers responded to W on D to a call about a woman who had approached a passerby and asked for help, claiming she had been raped.

The victim told police that Romero brazenly grabbed her and forced her to the ground where he raped her.

Luckily, the victim was able to fight off Romero and run for help. Police were able to locate Romero shortly after the attack.

“What is concerning is the number of times this person has been arrested and released. He continues to commit crimes over and over again. And his behavior escalated to sexual assault in a public space in our city last night,” Debord said.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin also shared a statement regarding the incident. and was upset that local officials had allowed Romero back on the road.

“I feel sorry for this victim. and are angry that local officials in Fairfax County have so recklessly released violent illegal immigrants who should be prosecuted and deported. This is an abdication of their most basic duty of keeping people safe,” Youngin said in a post about X.

“Prioritizing violent illegal immigrants over the safety of Fairfax residents is unacceptable. Virginia is not a safe haven state. When President Trump took office The political stance will end. And localities will work with ICE to protect Virginians.”

Romero is currently at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He is being held without bond.
