President Biden on Thanksgiving said he was grateful for the smooth transition of power to the second Trump administration. Meanwhile, he called on the incoming commander-in-chief to “rethink” threats to impose steep tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods.
“I hope (President-elect Trump) will reconsider. I think it’s a counterproductive move,” Biden told reporters Thursday on Nantucket. Trump also threatened to slap additional 10% tariffs on China. Biden said President Xi Jinping of China “Don’t want to make a mistake.”
“I didn’t say he was our best friend. But he understands what is at stake,” he said.

President Biden also said on Thursday that illegal crossing of the border is allowed. There has been a “significant drop” since Trump’s first term in office. Trump campaigned heavily on the border crisis that erupted after Biden took office.
The president also said he was pleased with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon and that he was “very happy” that China had released three Americans who had been “wrongfully detained” for years.
