College Football Playoff staple Alabama left the latest round of projections after a week full of upsets.


If the latest college football rankings hold up. This year’s semifinals will look even more different than expected.

When the committee announced it would move from a four-team to a 12-team playoff format, it looked like Alabama would be a lock every year.

But in the first year of a playoff series with dozens of teams, the Crimson Tide was on the outside looking in.

5. Ohio State (10-1, 7-1); Second place

6. Penn State (10-1, 7-1); Fourth place

7. Notre Dame (10-1); Fifth place

This means that the first two teams to come out are Clemson (No. 12) and Alabama.
