Police in California have released a video of three accused shoplifters who were shocked to learn that the penalties for their crimes had recently been changed.
in a viral surveillance video shared by the Seal Beach Police Department on Sunday. Three women are seen walking into an Ulta Beauty store, browsing the shelves. then accidentally left the store with what police say was nearly $650 worth of stolen merchandise.
“…a friendly reminder that Prop. 36, which increases penalties for retail theft and drug possession offenses, Effective Wednesday morning in California,” the Seal Beach Police Department wrote in the caption of the video on their Instagram account.
The video shows the women entering another business and allegedly stealing more merchandise. This totaled nearly $1,000 in stolen merchandise.

Bodycam video shows police officers chasing down the women and eventually arresting them.
“Is it a crime?” one woman asks another in the back of a patrol car.
“B—new law,” the woman replied. “Stealing is a criminal offence. and this city of Orange County They don’t play.”

Police shared a friendly warning along with the video.
“The measure repeals some of the changes voters made to a 2014 ballot measure that made certain nonviolent crimes become misdemeanors. Effectively reduce prison sentences. and has led to a sharp increase in retail theft and crime,” police said. “At Seal Beach, we have never believed in referral and outreach programs. But this new proposal only strengthens our commitment to combating organized retail theft. Remember everyone, don’t steal in Seal.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom continues to strongly oppose efforts to repeal parts of Proposition 47, saying it “takes us back to the 1980s, which was mass incarceration.”
