last week President Biden served the Thanksgiving leftover that no one wanted: a “full and unconditional pardon” for his son, Hunter.
Among Democrats Unqualified heartburn followed this, in keeping with the Democrats’ already turbulent turmoil that began with last month’s election defeat. Circular Game Blame Donald Trump’s rogue Cabinet picks and Kamala’s continued attacks Harris renews fundraising email after collapse (Please unsubscribe!) … Now hopeless Democrats are left trying to explain away the hypocrisy of those in the White House.
As soon as news of the pardon broke out I’m reminded of the metaphor people still invoke to explain Trump’s appeal: He’s the “big middle finger” to the puritanical adherents of the political establishment. Not that Trump supporters admire everything about him. They only admired that his foul language and rude style were a rebuke to the self-serving hypocrites.
It turns out Biden can use the big middle finger himself. and headed straight for his own dwindling defenders. Many have appeared on TV in the past and echoed Biden’s promise that he would never pardon Hunter. They say Biden will not resort to the kind of bare-bones self-dealing that Trump so gleefully engages in. that Democrats – unlike Republicans – remain “committed to the rule of law,” with Biden being “A man follows his word.”
And now they’ve seen it. Those clips played back. over and over again
As Biden himself said as he wrapped up his re-election campaign, “True, the sacred cause of this country is greater than any one of us.”
At least until after Election Day. At this point All bets will be settled.
High morals can overestimate the value of real estate. Especially for someone who had such a short time that his students were defeated by a villain. And his own son is facing prison time.
“This sacred mission of perfecting our union does not concern me,” Biden also said this past summer. “It’s about you.”
OK, great, but here’s the deal. As the president would say: This isn’t the first time Biden has caused lies to come out of his loyal circle. In fact, Biden has spent most of his presidency perpetuating his own big lies. That his declining years didn’t apply to him in some way. That he could continue to do the most stressful job in the world into his 80s, he continued to insist, even as his decline became evident.
To make matters worse, Biden is involved with a party full of his illusory proxies. With some exceptions They protect his declining abilities. While it’s clear he’s past his new date, Biden has lost a lot of goodwill over this charade.
Regardless, how brazen is Biden’s pardon reversal? It’s not surprising. Biden is a politician after all. He was one for the rest of his adult life. Sometimes politicians will change positions. Also called “lies,” they can be slippery, selfish, opportunistic, and calculating.
But in the end, they had nothing to lose. They might as well grab what they can. It might not make for the cleanest sunset ride. But it can save a world of hassle in retirement.
Biden is shunned by his own team. When Trump wins Biden still gets a lot of blame. Clearly, he feels much less indebted to the Democratic Party than he used to.
It is easy to sympathize with Hunter Biden’s paternalistic concerns and self-interests, suffering a great loss. Struggling to fight addiction And he will almost certainly be targeted because of his family’s position. Joe Biden has expressed remorse for his overly public role in making things worse. More difficult with the only son still living. He understandably felt protected. Especially during his final weeks in power where he was still able to help Hunter. Not that Trump has been shy about expressing his intent to punish his political enemies, either.
But this decision will leave Americans feeling more jaded than ever before. And that’s what Trump wants. He never tried to convince anyone that he was innocent. It’s just that everyone is dirty. He is not interested in claiming to be righteous. Power was the only currency he needed.
It is telling that one of the most popular defenses to Biden’s pardon is that he has every right to do so. And there is no doubt that Trump will do the same. Only losers are bound by unspoken norms and rules.
“If someone as confident in Barnum & Bailey as Trump could become president, So why do the rest of us care about our ps and qs?” is how Tim Miller wrote in. at FortressIn summary, the reasons Miller vehemently rejected this position. He describes the “lol, nothing matters” attitude in the Trump era as: “Moral bankrupt and childish”
Trump is considered the worst politician. He then lowered the bar accordingly, with Biden for the most part holding himself to the higher, more honorable standards of the presidency. That’s what makes this final act so poignant: he proves the cynics right.
