But for Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, every win to end the regular season could mean a contract extension. And the warm embrace with owner Jerry Jones has fans wondering if that will happen any time soon.
McCarthy and Jones shared a big hug after the Cowboys defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-24 on “Sunday Night Football.”

During the media McCarthy talks about the locker room he was just in. And the feeling that his group is still playing like it’s the last match of the season. Even though the playoffs aren’t in the picture.
“I just think it shows you who they are,” McCarthy explains. “I think everyone says coaches are always talking about the locker room. This is what I’m talking about. When I mention ‘It’s a great locker room,’ this is the definition of it. This is what A good locker room looks like it.”
Quite a turnaround for McCarthy, who appears to be out of the gate as the Cowboys move closer to a top draft pick instead of a playoff spot. But despite the difficulties in 2024, McCarthy won approval from Prescott and others about the contract extension.
Jones himself had recently commented on the status of McCarthy’s contract, saying near Thanksgiving that he didn’t feel like an extension would be “crazy.” After all, McCarthy went. 12-5 in each of the previous three seasons. That remains above .500 one year.
