D.C. police investigate 5-year-old brother shot in apartment

A 5-year-old girl is fighting for her life at a hospital in Washington, D.C., after she was shot by her brother Monday evening. According to the report of the Metropolitan Police Department

Chief Pamela Smith said officers responded to a report of a shooting at about 6:30 p.m. inside an apartment in the unit block of southwest Galveston Road.

At the scene, a 5-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

“This child is currently in serious condition,” Smith said Monday night at a news conference. “It was a very unfortunate incident.”

The little girl was shot by her brother, who had access to an unsecured firearm inside the apartment, Smith said. She is believed to be about 3 years old.

“This incident highlights the dangers of unsafe firearms in the home. and especially around children,” Smith said. “We want to emphasize the importance of gun safety. And we ask that you all keep our young female victims in your prayers at this time.”

A man who police described as a long-time family friend. He was arrested inside the apartment and charged with child abuse. The two children were left in his care while their mother ran errands.

Police do not know if the man is related to his mother. But said the apartment was hers.

A woman was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting a special police officer working at the apartment. Details about the incident were not released. But Smith said she is the younger sister of the girl who was shot.

When asked who owns the gun or is it a ghost gun? Smith said officials still don’t know. He added that the investigation is still at the preliminary stage.

“When we have firearms in the house There is an expectation that we will keep firearms secret. And especially away from our little children,” Smith said.
