Day 18 of the Space Telescope Advent Calendar 2024: Active Prototype Star FS Tau is a multi-star system consisting of FS Tau A, a bright star-like object near the center of the image, and FS Tau B (Haro 6-5B ), which is the bright object on the far right that is partially obscured by a dark, vertical dust lane. The young object is surrounded by gas and dust that glows softly from this stellar nursery. The system is approximately 2.8 million years old, which is very young for a stellar system. FS Tau B is a newly formed star, or protostar. and is surrounded by protoplanetary disks They are pancake-shaped clouds of dust and gas left over from star formation that eventually coalesce to form planets. Protostars are known to emit fast-moving column-like streams of energetic material. This is called a jet, and the FS Tau B is a clear example of this phenomenon. Stars form as a source of unusually asymmetrical two-sided jets. This is visible here in blue.
