The violent crime rate in Washington, D.C. is the lowest in 30 years, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Violent crime in the district is down 35% year-over-year so far, with 3,388 incidents in 2024 compared to 5,215 incidents in 2023, said Matthew M. Graves, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
The most dramatic crime declines this year include homicides down 30%, sexual assaults down 22%, assaults with a dangerous weapon down 27%, robberies down 8% and burglaries down 8%. %

Graves said data shows that those who commit violent crimes include “hundreds of individuals across the city.”
“Many of them belong to…what we in the district call ‘crews,’ organizations of individuals. They are usually located in the neighborhood or block where they grew up. and participated in many different crimes,” he said.
“In some ways their activities are directly linked to violence. In other cases, the activities they engage in that drive open-air drug markets are magnets for violence,” he added. “Therefore, hunting down people who Really responsible for violent crimes So it’s an incredibly effective strategy for reducing their numbers.”
Graves said prosecution isn’t the only way to reduce crime.

“These are often deep-seated issues with drivers coming from poverty, lack of services, health issues, educational issues,” he said. “We can influence these numbers. We can take violence off the streets. We can work to deter others from becoming drivers of gun violence. Graves attributes the decrease in violent crime to his office working with the Metropolitan Police Department to target the small number of people committing violent crimes in the district.
