Gunn said the shocking image of fallen heroes is a reference to an America that still stands up for good. Even though he called it the current bloody and beaten state.
“I believe in the goodness of humans. and believe that most people in this country Despite their ideological and political beliefs, everyone tries their best to become a good person. No matter what the other party looks like,” he said.
But the dire state of Gunn’s Superman represents America as it has been damaged by “A dark sound,” he said.
“This movie is about that. It’s about basic human compassion. And it was considered uncool and surrounded (by) some of the darker voices, the louder voices.”

In the rest of the Q&A session Gunn reinforces the idea that the film is about human goodness and overcoming these “dark” influences.
He said: “It is about basic human kindness. It is a noble proof. And it is one that seems designed to appeal to all political angles. It is a moral call to embrace decency and positivity.”
Gunn, who avoids specific political issues has been a consistent critic of President Donald Trump, calling him in office in 2017 “an incompetent president who launches a full-scale attack on facts and journalism in the style of Hitler and Putin.”

During the Superman event Gunn also discussed how he wanted the reboot to distance itself from some of the themes in past iterations of the franchise.
“Yet, given how often contemporary superhero stories are viewed as allegories for our divisive times, “There’s an underlying concern,” he said. “Ultimately, the previous D.C. segment has been criticized for flirting with dark political undertones and ‘Imagination of Fascist Power'”
“We all feel like we are doing something good. It is not the imagination of fascist powers,” he added elsewhere.
