Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, who ran a failed presidential campaign against President Biden; defended his decision to go against the party’s leadership in a recent interview despite criticism.

Phillips announced in 2023 that he would not run for re-election in 2024. The decision came after he faced a primary challenge against Biden. Although his campaign was unsuccessful, The Minnesota congressman also used his media mission to clarify his concerns about Biden’s age.

“If what I feel right now is an excuse. It was extremely unsatisfactory,” Phillips said. “I felt vindicated the day I announced my campaign. Because I know this isn’t an opinion. This is the fact. The truth is He was not in a position to win. The fact is that his approval numbers are at an all-time low. The fact is his physical deterioration. And all I care about is myself And I regret that I have been vindicated. I’d rather trade that excuse for success. And that’s the reason.
