Caitlin Clark was named AP Female Athlete of the Year without much competition. But one person who received the vote was the cause of much conflict over the summer.
A group of 74 sports journalists from The Associated Press and members voted for the award. Clark received 35 votes. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles came in second with 25 votes.
But Olympic gold medalist boxer Imane Khelif was third, earning four points.

Clef qualified for the Paris Olympics. But Clive’s gender has been questioned after he was disqualified from the 2023 championships ahead of the gold medal match over gender qualification issues.
IBA President Umar Kremlev said the boxer had an XY chromosome, which is associated with being born male.
One boxer, Angela Carini, waived her right to fight Clef in Paris, saying “one punch hurt too much”.
Clef wins gold in Paris And the women’s gold medalist wasn’t the only boxer to be disqualified for failing a gender qualification test: Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting won gold in another women’s weight category in Paris. Which causes dissatisfaction as well.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended Khelif and Yu-ting’s inclusion in the women’s competition to the end.

“These two athletes were victims of the IBA’s sudden and arbitrary decision towards the end of the 2023 IBA World Championships. They were abruptly disqualified without any due process,” the IOC said during the event.
Clef was later awarded a gold medal. Clef did not lose a single round on the scoreboard in Paris.
After Carini won her eighth Italian women’s championship earlier this month. She claimed the victory was her “revenge.”
