Marine critic of Afghanistan withdrawal leads Senate visit to promote Hegseth

“Pete has publicly expressed his desire to move to a meritocracy. And he believes we need more courage in positions, so I’m not saying I won’t be criticized. (If he was secretary),” Scheller said.

“I still think there is probably some blame that needs to happen. But it will cross the board.”

“The difference is If Pete were the Minister of Defense General officials will also be held accountable. (for a failed withdrawal) and I did not have to go so far as to pay attention to the situation.”

Scheller said that over the past decade or two, the U.S. military “hasn’t won anything. And we need to turn it into a winning organization.”

Scheller said Hegseth plans to hold Pentagon leaders accountable, in the lieutenant colonel’s words, “silent.”

He also emphasized that Hegseth is the first Pentagon nominee in decades. It does not come from a team of officials or a defense contractor.

Secretary of State Lloyd Austin III is a retired CENTCOM general. But it also comes from Raytheon’s board of directors.

“Forty years of becoming a four-star general really takes you out of the military,” Scheller said of past choices by secretaries of staff and committees.

“Pete’s middle management is a major, I mean, he’s like the perfect guy … and he’s sitting here talking to veterans as he develops his book. Trying to understand their pulse and heartbeat, so that book he wrote It probably prepared him more than any other secretary of defense in terms of today’s culture, feelings and frustrations.”

As for his plans for Hill next week? Scheller said he and service members are focusing on those who may seem uncertain about Hegseth.

“I am looking for the right people rather than total quantity,” he said.

Scheller will also release a video announcing his Wednesday mission.

“(Hegseth) is a veteran of our generation and … he is not a puppet of the military industrial complex. He will not end up on one of their boards like every other military officer of our generation,” Scheller said in the video.

“I will be going to Washington, D.C., walking through the halls of the United States Senate. Talk to every U.S. senator to advocate for peace.”
