Packers clinch playoff berth with victory over Saints

Green Bay Packers fans can quickly start wrapping Christmas gifts for their loved ones. As their team defeated the New Orleans Saints on Monday night 34-0.

The Saints defense had no answer for Packers running back Josh Jacobs and as they got closer to the red zone with each drive. They still came back without a point. The battle in tandem turned into a moral waste late in the season that was already over.

The Packers looked good early on. and are always on track to clinch a playoff spot.

Jacobs’ rushing attack helped put Green Bay on board on its first drive. It ended with Jordan Love’s 2-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks, then Jacobs was rewarded with a touchdown of his own on the team’s second drive.

Before anyone knew it, Green Bay led 21-0 and the halftime whistle blew. Aside from two second-half goals, It was all the Packers needed to win the game and improve to 11-4.

Love was 16 of 28 with 182 passing yards and a touchdown.

Jacobs, Emmanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks all had rushing touchdowns. Jacobs led everyone in rushing with 68 yards, Jayden Reed had three catches for 76 yards, Wicks had three catches for 13 yards.

Spencer Rattler was fired.

Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler finished 15-of-30 for 153 yards and an interception. He led the team with 28 rushing yards. He was sacked three times. New Orleans completed just 20 passes.

Jordan Mims had a team-leading five catches but gained just 16 yards. No other player had more than two catches. Foster Moreau had a team-leading 33 receiving yards.

Considered a true NFC North contender, the Packers have one of the best records in football. But they find themselves in third place in the division, as the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings are both 13-2. Both teams also closed out the semifinals.

Green Bay has one more victory over the Washington Commanders. That gives them the No. 6 seed in the playoffs if the regular season ends Monday night. The Packers clinch a playoff spot.

The Saints have suffered through a number of coaching changes and injuries to most of their key players. If only they were a little luckier. They could compete in the NFC South division with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
