President Biden addressed the nation on Sunday following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, praising the late statesman. while also addressing the current president-elect during his speech.
Biden, whose voice broke during his speech, said he “lost a dear friend” on Sunday. Noting that he had known Carter for more than 50 years, Carter died in Plains, Ga., at age 100 after nearly two years in hospice care.
During the speech Biden said Carter is a role model. “The meaning of living life with meaning and purpose A life of principles, faith, and humility.”
“Some people look at Jimmy Carter and see a man from a bygone era of integrity and character. Faith and humility are important. But I don’t believe that’s a bygone era,” Biden said. “We should all try to be like Jimmy. Carter more.”

Biden said his fondest memory of Carter came in the 1970s, when the then-governor of Georgia asked Biden for help in his presidential campaign.
“He grabbed my arm and said, “I said, ‘I need you to help my campaign,'” Biden recalled. “I said, ‘I’ve only been here a couple of years, Mr. Governor.’ He said, ‘No, it’s going to make a difference.'”
“I said, ‘I’m not sure that’s the case,’” Biden added. “When I supported him for president, I told him why (I) supported him. And that’s not just his policy. But also his character. His suitability And the honor that he communicates to everyone.”

When reporters asked President-elect Biden what Trump should take from Carter’s legacy, Biden replied: “Appropriateness.”
“Appropriateness, appropriateness, appropriateness…you can imagine Jimmy. Can Carter walk past someone who wants something and just move on? Can you imagine Jimmy? Can Carter refer to someone by their appearance or words?”
Biden’s speech came after Trump issued his own statement on Carter’s death.
