The turmoil surrounding efforts to pass legislation to avert a government shutdown is putting the upcoming speaker vote in the spotlight. Meanwhile, Johnson has struggled to keep the party fully united.
But the president-elect told Fox News Digital that Johnson would maintain his role as speaker. “easily”
“If the speaker acts decisively, firmly and eliminates all the traps that Democrats have set in place, This will destroy our country economically and in other ways. He will easily continue as speaker,” Trump told Fox News Digital.
The speaker vote is scheduled for January 1-Oct. 3, 2025.
It is now dead upon arrival. The bill is 1,547 pages thick. It is slated to be a short-term expansion of government funding levels in fiscal year 2024, with the goal of giving lawmakers more time to agree on funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2025 by Friday’s deadline.
In addition to funding the government through March 14, the bill includes more than $100 billion in disaster assistance to help Americans affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. This also includes $10 billion in economic relief for farmers. as well as health care reform measures and provisions aimed at rehabilitating RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., and surrounding campuses.
The bill also proposes a pay raise for members of Congress.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus said they felt left out by what they saw as an unrelated policy driver added to the bill in last-minute negotiations.
Several GOP lawmakers, who agreed to remain anonymous to speak freely, said Johnson would face challenges to his speaker bid in early January on the matter.
