A 20-year-old college football player died from a sustained head injury sustained during a game.
“When we took over this project Tommy truly was our leader in so many ways,” former head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement provided by the school. “CMU football is fortunate to have him and will always remember him. For everything he did for so many of us. He will be missed by all Chippewas.”
Lazzaro played four years at Central Michigan. He appeared in five games from 2016-19. During the 2019 season, he led the Chippewas to a 6-2 record in conference play and bowl appearances. He finished his career at Central Michigan with 542 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns and 758 yards and five touchdowns.
