A hiker who has been missing for more than six weeks was found in the Canadian wilderness earlier this week. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
Northern Rockies RCMP were notified on Tuesday at approximately 11:30 a.m. that 20-year-old Sam Benastick had been found. He was reported missing by his family on Oct. 1, 2019.
Benastick’s family panicked when he didn’t check in after leaving on a 10-day solo camping trip on Oct. 17 in harsh winter conditions. with temperatures dropping below 4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Benastick was discovered when two people traveling to work along the Redfern Lake Trail saw him walking towards him. He used a cane to support himself. and used a cut-down sleeping bag to keep his legs warm.
The men took Benastick to the hospital, where police confirmed he was the missing camper.
He told police he stayed in the car for some time and then walked to a stream and mountain bank where he camped for 10 to 15 days. He later moved down into the valley and built a camp and shelter in the creek at It was dry before the two men finally waved their flags.
“Finding Sam alive is the best outcome. After he disappeared for a long time I’m afraid this is not the outcome,” said RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson.
The agency thanked the many jurisdictions for their support of each other during the search. Including Canadian rangers and volunteers with extensive backcountry knowledge.

“The time, effort and resources invested in searching for Sam since he was reported missing is immeasurable. We are grateful for the excellent results,” said Saunderson.
