Donald Trump’s re-election should end two progressive illusions, Packer explained last night: The first illusion is the idea that identity is political destiny. The second is the theory that Democrats are kept from power by the Republican white minority that thwarts the will of the people through various means, such as voter suppression or the use of Jerry Mander
“The Democratic Party has become the party of the establishment and the status quo of institutions,” Packer said. The party has organized itself under that framework. “The most basic identities of citizens are group identities based on race, gender, and sexuality,” but in doing so, they “lost many ordinary Americans who do not view themselves primarily in those terms. Most of whom are working class people … and who used to be the backbone of the Democratic Party.”
Meanwhile Just as the working class moved away from the Democrats and toward the Republicans. The country’s increasingly isolated global position is also being built. “We are not the unipolar power that we were after the end of the Cold War,” Packer said. “We stand for some order. certain values Some liberal views of the world And I think that could collapse quickly under Trump. Because he doesn’t believe in it, in fact, he wants to destroy it.” And so do the people he puts into important positions.”
