Thomas Conley, a second grader at Porter Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona, noticed his friend choking on a grape and rushed to take action, according to local reports.
Conley immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver, also known as an abdominal push, on Isaiah Rodriguez, which caused the vine to come loose.

Candice Conley, Thomas’ mother, spoke with Fox News Digital about the life-saving operation on her son.
“We are very proud of him,” she said. “Thomas is a quick thinker and very energetic. And he’s a really good friend.”

The family often discusses food safety and kitchen safety at home, Conley said, because she and her husband work in the food industry. And now she works in the Department of Public Health for Maricopa County.

Thomas was “very indifferent” about what was happening, Conley said.
“He was like, ‘My friend needs help. So I helped him,’” she said.

“It’s really cool that Thomas is involved in that. And we can raise awareness about choking. Because that day would be really bad.”
Thomas told Fox News Digital, “My life probably wouldn’t have received this much attention.”

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department also remembered Thomas on its Facebook page.
