Comedian hits low ratings on CNN during New Year’s Eve special

Stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings mocks CNN’s low ratings during the channel’s live New Year’s Eve special.

while appearing on CNN’s long-running “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” on Tuesday night. Cummings joked about cable news channels not having many viewers.

“Right now I’m playing a show of 3,000 people, which is about the viewership of CNN these days,” the comic said during the show.

Cummings’ Excavation It comes just two hours before the ball drops in New York City’s Times Square on Tuesday night. She softened the blow, adding, “It’s not this show. All eyes are on this program.”

host Andy Cohen from Bravo and longtime CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. That seemed to help Cummings into his stride. “Great, great,” Cooper replied, laughing. As Cohen said, “You are so hot today.”

Cooper went on to say that he and Cohen went on tour together which had an audience that was similar in size to Cummings’ tour. “We like about 3,000 people,” he said.

The cartoon’s jokes have certainly been a target for ratings-challenged networks. which lost a lot of viewers after President Donald Trump’s victory.

In the two weeks following Trump’s victory, CNN saw double-digit percentage declines in key metrics, dropping 33% of total viewers. That compares to the 2024 average, losing 39% in the demo and 36% of its already small audience in prime time.

During the first week of December CNN’s primetime shows “Anderson Cooper 360,” “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” and “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip” averaged just 367,000 total viewers between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. By comparison, Fox News Channel had An average of 2.5 million total primetime viewers during the same period.

Those numbers put CNN at No. 17 among cable stations’ primetime lineups that week. Food Network’s primetime offering saw a larger audience during that same period.

Elsewhere during an appearance on CNN, Cummings attacked the entertainment industry for lecturing Americans.

When asked about her new hosting gig for streaming service Max’s “Friends”-themed trivia show “Fast Friends” and whether she’s a fan of the legendary ’90s sitcom, She replied, “You know what? I’m a friend’s boyfriend. I’m also a huge fan of entertainment that just happens to be entertaining. There’s this whole thing where Hollywood has to lecture people on how to vote.” And it makes you feel guilty about global warming.”

“It was just a fun show. Nothing creepy. It is warm and useful,” the cartoon added.
