At Tokyo Game Show 2024, we spoke with Yuke’s Guillame Cailteux about the exact direction behind the upcoming Double Dragon.
Among the many games showcased at Tokyo Game Show 2024, Double Dragon Revive made its first notable gameplay appearance at the Arc System Works booth, and we got to play some of it. It’s quite different, very combo-heavy, with a lot of unique options for attacking using the environment. With that in mind, we caught up with Creative Director Guillame Cailteux from Yuke’s to talk about how the team is trying things out. New and improve the formula while still maintaining the elements that made Double Dragon great.
For Cailteux, taking on a role in Double Dragon was stressful in itself. The franchise goes back several decades and has many different elements. Most of the time it remains the same, such as the punch button, kick button, back attack function. and special items that deplete your health These elements are present in Double Dragon Revive, but the game places a heavy emphasis on combos and contextual combat. During the time I played this game There are many opportunities to crush opponents into walls. Bounce them off the floor. Launch them into the air, and more, depending on where you and your opponent are when you try to attack or grab them.
The most important thing to Yuke’s and Cailteux is making sure that fun is at the top of everything they do. Of course, no one is trying to make the game not fun. But as Double Dragon fans’ expectations wane, there’s pressure to keep things as they have been. Cailteux feels that despite some pushback, But the team felt it was just as important. Another thing is not to be afraid to break the old rules. and try different things If only they could make it all a more enjoyable experience.
