Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke about Elon Musk’s influence on spending drama on Capitol Hill on Thursday.
“If you keep up A Republican Party that takes orders from the richest man in the world. The government is shutting down for the holidays. Stop paying salaries to our troops and nutrition benefits for low-income families in time for Christmas,” the 2016 presidential candidate wrote on X.

Her comments came as House Speaker Mike Johnson launched a new version of the continuing resolution, or CR, to keep the government open beyond a Friday night deadline.
Musk expressed strong opposition to the original spending deal that Johnson negotiated with Democrats. It threatened to support a primary challenge to the Republicans who voted for it.
If no deal is passed to kick the government funding deadline to March and continue spending at 2024 levels, the government will be partially shut down at midnight Saturday.

“Musk-Johnson’s proposal is not serious. But it’s laughable. Radical MAGA Republicans are pushing us to shut down the government,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., said Democratic leaders would persuade their members to vote “no” on the deal.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., lamented that the final deal was undermined by opposition from conservatives. It received input from DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
“Everyone agreed,” he said, “and then Elon Musk, which apparently became the fourth branch of the government, exploded. And that’s just an unacceptable way of proceeding.”
“Democrats will try to figure out how we can salvage the public interest from the wreckage that has just been pushed out.”
Shouts of “no” could be heard in the room where Democrats were meeting after the bill was released.

House lawmakers can vote on the new bill starting Thursday evening.
It was not immediately clear whether the new deal would pass — Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who led the initial bill opposition, also blasted the new deal.
“More debt, more government. Add $4 trillion to credit cards without restraint and reduce spending to zero. Hard,” Roy wrote on X.
