Speculation has swirled around Mike McCarthy’s job throughout the season.

McCarthy has the final year of his contract remaining. And it’s unclear whether longtime owner Jerry Jones will choose to bring him or any other member of the current coaching staff back. During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday. Jones was asked if offering McCarthy a contract extension was something he would consider questionable.

“I don’t think it’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy,” Jones said. “Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach. … Mike McCarthy has been there. He has a great idea. So the most important thing is not in my body language or anything else that you see any indication about who we are. “We will be working on our relationship with this team later this year. We have a lot of football left.”

McCarthy declined questions about Jones’ comments, citing preparations for the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day game with the New York Giants.

“I haven’t talked about it all year. And it certainly won’t start in a short week. and an important division game,” he said. “But I won’t give up on the positive feelings either. So keep doing it. It’s all good stuff, but yeah, that’s not really what I’m focused on.”

Dallas is not mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Claiming a wild card spot seems unlikely, however, one thing Dallas won’t do is put the game down for the sake of a better NFL Draft.
“I just think this game is too important. Winning is too important,” Jones said. “You look at the coaches. And the coach was sitting there. Don’t think that they haven’t combined victories and defeats in their careers. And they don’t like to lose there if they can ask for it. So my point for all of us is that winning is very satisfying and it helps you build. So there’s a lot of ambiguity with those draft picks. This is considered exceptionally high, which is not effective. So you have to weigh what will happen when you get that option. And chances are you’ll knock someone out of the park as well. That’s different than winning a game.”
