Linda Lavin, Oscar-winning actress from the hit sitcom “Alice,” has died. She was 87 years old.
Lavin was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. and died on Sunday of complications. a representative told the Associated Press.

Lavin seemed to know from an early age that she was destined for a life as an actress. Moving to New York City after graduating from college. Her first big break came when she starred in the Broadway musical “It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman.”
In 1969, she received her first Tony nomination for her work in “Last of the Red Hot Lovers.”

In the 70s, she moved to Los Angeles where she began working as a television actress. She appeared in an episode of “Rhoda” and then had a small recurring role in “Barney Miller.”
In 1976, she was cast in a new CBS sitcom based on Ellen Burstyn’s Oscar-winning Waitress comedy-drama, “Alice Doesn’t Live.” Here Anymore”
The name was shortened to “Alice,” and Lavin became a role model for working mother Alice Hyatt, a widow with a 12-year-old son working in a roadside diner outside Phoenix. A performance with Lavin singing background songs. “There’s a New Girl in Town” ran from 1976 to 1985.

The show turns “Kiss my grits” into a catchphrase and stars Polly Holliday as waitress Flo and Vic Tayback as the rude owner and head chef of Mel’s Diner.

The series bounced around CBS’ schedule for its first two seasons. But it became a hit, leading to “All in the Family” on Sunday nights in October 1977 being one of the top 10 primetime series for four of the next five seasons. Variety magazine ranks it as the best workplace comedy of all time.

She had several stage roles in the years following the success of “Alice,” including a performance in the 1990 musical “Gypsy.” Her most recent role was in 2016 in “Our Mother’s Short Story.”
