“Remember where we were when the president took office,” Mayorkas said. “We are in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous government enforced Section 42, which is the public health authority. and allows us to expel individuals from the country and continue expelling people at the border as the previous administration had done. There is a lot of pressure to maintain the functioning of Title 42, which we have until May 2023.”

He continued: “Then we turned to Congress. And we asked for much-needed additional funding to make our broken immigration administration work much better. We were denied. We went back to Congress a second time and asked for additional funding, and then we were denied. We turned to bilateral negotiations, which proved successful. who was later killed, resulting in a really great solution. Murdered by irresponsible politics.”

The “bipartisan negotiations” refers to the Senate border bill negotiated by Republican Sen. James Lankford, Okla., and Sen. Chris Murphy, Conn., and Sen. Kyrsten, R-Arizona. The White House, though, largely blames Republicans for blocking passage of the bill. But the bill failed to pass the Senate in a 43-50 vote over bipartisan opposition.

“Looking back on 2020, if we knew that irresponsible politics would destroy what was clearly a valuable effort and a noble outcome, Maybe we can move the administration forward faster,” Mayorkas said.

As recently as April 2023, Mayorkas asserted that the border is “secure” despite a record number of border crossings during the Biden administration, a claim he has repeated. Even in the face of scorn from Republicans.
