Patrick Mahomes practiced Tuesday despite dealing with an apparent high ankle sprain.
Mahomes is listed as a full participant during the short practice week. Ahead of a high-stakes showdown with the Houston Texans, he left Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns after suffering an injury. He said he doesn’t know if he will play Saturday. But he knows what he has to do if he plays.
“I want to be able to move. I want to get out of the way,” Mahomes said, adding that the Texans boast a dangerous pass rush. The Texans hold the second-most sacks in the NFL this season, with 45, behind the Denver Broncos, who are The league leader is only 4 positions.
“You don’t want to go out there and put yourself in danger, it’s football, you’re going to get attacked. But you want to be able to defend yourself,” Mahomes said.

“I don’t want to limit the game plan,” Mahomes said. “That’s another thing for me. I want to still be able to move around the pocket so that we’re not sitting in one spot the whole game and chasing good lines, so it’s about me finding that balance and seeing where I’m at. And like I said I won’t know until near the end of this week.”
The Chiefs are in contention to remain at the top of the AFC, and at 13-1, they have the best record in the league and a two-game lead over Buffalo. “It’s not a good feeling,” Mahomes told reporters. “You don’t want to play this many games in such a short amount of time. It’s not good for your body. But in the end It’s your job, your career, you have to come to work and do it.”
Mahomes was asked if he had ever had three games in such a short period of time.
“I’m not in football,” he replied.
“All you can do is focus on the game. The training you have that day,” Mahomes added, “I try to prepare my body all year for this stretch. That’s my workout customization. Customize the way you train and prepare.
“And the coaches did a great job taking care of us on the training field. We train as hard as anyone, but they know how to dial back when needed.”
