Earlier this week, Patrick Mahomes said he didn’t want to put himself in “danger” and wanted to “protect” himself after suffering an apparent high ankle sprain.
For now, it appears Mahomes has nothing to worry about.
The two-time NFL MVP is not on the Kansas City Chiefs’ injury report and will be available to play against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
Head coach Andy Reid told reporters Thursday that Mahomes will “likely” play.

The injury came at an inopportune time with the Chiefs having to miss three games in 11 days due to playing on Christmas Day. It was a rare Wednesday NFL game.
“It’s not a good feeling,” Mahomes told reporters last week about the schedule. “You don’t want to play a game of this size in such a short space of time. It’s not good for your body. But in the end It’s your job, your career, you have to come to work and do it.”
“All you can do is focus on the game. The training you had that day,” he added. “I try to prepare my body all year for this stretch. That’s my workout customization. Customize the way you train and prepare. And the coach did a great job taking care of us on the training field. We practice as hard as anyone.’ But they know how to call back when needed.”
Mahomes injured his ankle in the fourth quarter on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. X-rays were negative, but backup Carson Wentz came into the game briefly.
Mahomes said he wants to “be able to move around” and “get out of the way” if he takes the field this weekend.

“You don’t want to go out there and put yourself in danger, it’s football, you’re going to get attacked. But you want to be able to protect yourself,” Mahomes said this week.
“I don’t want to limit the game plan,” Mahomes said. “That’s another thing for me. I want to still be able to move around the pocket so that we’re not sitting in one spot the whole game and chasing good lines, so it’s about me finding that balance and seeing where I’m at. And like I said I won’t know until near the end of this week.”
The Chiefs are in contention to remain at the top of the AFC, and at 13-1, they have the best record in the league and a two-game lead over Buffalo. Bills in first round bye But the Bills will hold the tiebreaker over the Chiefs if they finish with the same record because Buffalo beat Kansas City 30-21 Nov. 17.

A win would improve the Chiefs to 13-1 and move closer to clinching the top spot in the AFC.
