Comedian Michelle Buteau slams Dave Chappelle for making money from “unfunny” and “dangerous” jokes about the transgender community on his successful Netflix special.

“Dave, this isn’t funny. It’s dangerous,” she continued. “I can’t believe there are people making millions of dollars making other people feel unsafe. That was really crazy to me.”

Buteau announced, “I’m going to show it tonight. This is a takeover of Radio City Music Hall, and I’m telling everyone I want to make millions of dollars. To make people feel safe and seen and safe and heard and having fun.”

“I’m not saying you can’t say anything — I’m just saying, ‘Can you make it funny?’ Because it doesn’t seem funny,” Buto added. “You are hurting people and you are making it dangerous. And it wasn’t just Chappelle – it was a part of the culture that I didn’t understand.”
“When someone says, ‘We can’t do what we used to do’ Yes, slavery was once legal. Sometimes we have to move forward. And I’m sorry if it’s different. But please pay attention to it.”
In 2021, Chappelle jumped in to play a transgender comedy in the Netflix special “The Closer.” Transgender activists called on Netflix to end the project, and a small group of Netflix employees went on strike as well.
In 2023, he continued to make jokes about transgender people in his special “The Dreamer.” When he tells of his visit to Jim Carrey on the set of “The Man on the Moon” in 1999.
