Six Binge-Worthy Film Series – The Atlantic

Welcome back to The Daily’s Sunday culture edition.

There are few things better than staying on a Sunday afternoon and going to see a good movie, two or three. atlantic oceanThe writers and editors of Q&A: What is your favorite movie series?

at Mission: Impossible Series (streaming on Paramount+)

Watching all seven movies may sound difficult. But running a marathon Mission: Impossible Film is a mission I have always embraced. It’s pure popcorn entertainment. And watching them is an easier task than anything else Tom Cruise’s spy character has had to do in a franchise that’s nearly 30 years old—and with a new one coming next year—Ethan. Hunt prevented epidemics and nuclear war. Killed several arms dealers and leaders of terrorist organizations. And in what is still my favorite running gag, he wore a series of ridiculous masks. (and impressively realistic)

Part of the joy of watching Mission: Impossible The film at once is a glimpse into what each director did with the material. Brad Bird is known for his animation work. It brought a delightful kinetic energy. Ghost Protocolwhile Hong Kong director John Woo favors hypnotic slow-motion shots. Mission: Impossible II– Of course, the biggest draw remains Cruise’s dedication to his own stunts. Whether it’s jumping out of a plane or hanging off the side of a skyscraper, Ethan Hunt may be working to save the world, but Tom Cruise is trying to dazzle us. And in these movies He never fails.

at back to the future Trilogy (streaming on FuboTV)

I’m going to cheat this question a little. Because there’s almost always only one favorite movie. And I tend to binge watch sports too. But as the film series progresses What is less admired is that back to the future– The original is a family classic. I first saw it at the theater as a teenager with my boomer parents. This is the target audience for the film’s time travel humor.

The sequel investigates the twisted mind of Biff Tannen, a misogynistic oligarch of the future and one of my personal favorite movie villains (Tannen is also. Inspiration from Donald TrumpAccording to screenwriter Bob Gale, actor Tom Wilson also later played a more complex and sympathetic version of the bully. Physical education teacher on Weird and geeky.) The combination of this movie is a series of one page stories. valley valley telegramIt is a fictional article that has news judgments. It is so strange that I once wrote a column analyzing it

The sequel is like most sequels, though. But it is a story that contradicts the original. But each section explores the question: “What would you do if you traveled back in time and had modern knowledge?” The answer is: invent things, bet on sports, and try to score a date with Lea Thompson.

at Lord of the Rings Trilogy (streaming on Max)

There’s never a wrong time to watch it. Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but the winter holidays are the perfect time. These fantasy classics introduce you to the wonders of Middle-earth—full of history, language, and mythology—and to JRR Tolkien’s characters: Aragorn and his wisecracking pride. Frodo and his simple courage Gimli and his irreverent charm These books swept my eyes as a child. and Peter’s interpretation Jackson was more fair.

This is partly because the films are about three hours long each. (Four hours if you watch the extended version, which I recommend.) Jackson needs every minute to unfold a story that is intertwined and full of tension, struggle, friendship, and love. The length of the film is enjoyable. Perfect for those warm December and January evenings. Each movie is released in theaters on the third Wednesday of December. You can follow the latest live performances. hobbit trilogy, but I would actually choose the much shorter 1977. animated versionwhich attracts children of the novel perfectly

at high school music Trilogy (streaming on Disney+)

In the first installment of high school music A series where our protagonists are Troy, a 5-foot-8 basketball star, and Gabriella. A girl who is both beautiful and good at math. Accidentally auditions for the school musical and destabilizes the social order of the high school. Disney’s storylines are not as realistic as they are predictable. But real problems get in the way: The high school’s art department is struggling! Troy’s father could be cruel. It’s hard to know who you are when your classmates sing along to you about who you are.

The sequel is a pipe dream. A group of high school students get summer jobs at a country club. Troy nervously sang a rock song as he ran across the golf course. No notes

Then the ending: I see. High School Music 3 in the movie theater (The first two were made for television.) When I was 8 years old, years later, I still appreciate the film’s bittersweet celebration of senior year. and the stress of finding out what happened behind the closed curtain. If you decide to make this series your next film. Keep your eyes peeled for nostalgia and stay tuned for outstanding music (everyone, thank you to director Kenny Ortega, who also choreographed Michael Jackson’s stage performances).

at Indiana Jones Trilogy (streaming on Pluto TV and Prime Video)

I want to emphasize Trilogy– Fourth Indiana Jones The film suffers from too much Shia LaBeouf, and the fifth is an instantly forgettable CGI fest, but Invader of the Lost Ship And both sequels still maintain the magic. Harrison Ford’s relentless physical performance deserves a lot of credit. His Indiana Jones was the epitome of 20th century American masculinity. He was an academic. But not in the European way that is affected. This was a man who could keep a lion at bay with his whip. Defeat a tank on horseback. and punching all kinds of Nazis

The film is dated in its depiction of a certain culture—Temple of Doomwhich follows Jones on his adventures in India. Destroyed by inappropriate Orientalism But it still gives viewers an escape from powerful issues. Just the first hour of RidersWe are being transported to the Peruvian jungle. Snowy Himalayan living room and the sun-drenched streets of Cairo The ancient artefacts Jones sought added another layer of imagination. They ask us to imagine a lost world. Often through a mystical lens. And they did it all without slowing down for even a second.

at before Trilogy (available for rent on YouTube)

My favorite animated series is also the only one I’ve ever seen: Richard Linklater’s. before Trilogy I’m not a big fan of romantic movies. But these three magical films stand out from the rest. that has a similar story, I watched the first episode before sunriseIt was a dreary weekend in my 20s, which turned out to be the perfect time to watch a movie about two 20-somethings, played by Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, strolling around Vienna and falling in love.

After a while I followed up on the second story. before sunsetwhich has … the same actors This time as a 30-something, traveling around Paris and falling in love all over again. For some reason Just switching cities and ages works very well.

Soon after, in 2013, Linklater released the final installment. before midnightwhich I saw in the movie theater This has the advantage of being more difficult. Those are the two main characters who are now a couple. Struggling with being a parent Problems in career and other concerns of adults, but still can’t take my eyes off them.

What makes these five hours of two people talking so fascinating? This is Linklater’s gift for realistic talk. Or how we all hoped to meet our husbands on a European train in 1994. Hard to say but so easy to see.
