Former television news anchor Connie Chung made some scathing remarks in her memoir. This included the alleged dismissive treatment she received from her colleague Dan Rather when the two worked together in the 1990s.
Chung is only the second woman after Barbara Walters and the first Asian American to be a network news anchor. When she began co-anchoring the “CBS Evening News” with Rather in 1993, it was an attempt to help the show’s ratings.
“This is not just a personal milestone. But it is an important event for women and minorities. Since I will be the first of both groups to be a mentor on CBS News’ flagship broadcast,” Chung wrote in “Connie,” “I feel incredibly fortunate to ride the crest.”
While her tenure shattered glass ceilings and she calls it her “dream job,” Chung claims her position did not protect her from sexist comments from co-workers.

“Whilst quite openly welcoming Chung, he privately put her in her place, telling her ‘now you need to start reading the newspapers’.” Boston Globe Report on Chung’s new book “Connie”
“I swallowed hard,” she wrote of the incident. “Was this his idea to start a partnership? I’m forty-seven and have spent half my life in the news business – does he think I read comics? We just walked out the door on my thing. Hopefully it will take a long time. My answer: silence.”
Chung also wrote that Rather told her, “I’ll tell you stories from the field and then you read the teleprompter,” she added that her co-anchor It was described as “strict and humorless” and considered “inherently biased against women.”
She went on to say that there were quite a few attempts to undercut her and question her journalistic abilities among her colleagues.

Rather later resigned from his role as CBS evening news anchor in 2005, eventually leaving the network the following year. After reporting on the discrediting story of then-President George W. Bush’s service in Vietnam in the National Guard, the 92-year-old continues to express himself as a leftist on social media. Instead, he was interviewed by CBS earlier this year about his time at the network and his journalistic career.
Chung has additional revelations about the behavior of male anchors on TV news, including Bryant Gumbel.
“In her book Chung wrote about the number of men in TV news. News anchors in particular suffer from what she calls a ‘disease,'” the Globe reported. “For example, Bryant Gumbell has a contract with NBC that Jane Pauley, co-anchor of ‘Today, Show’ can’t say ‘Good morning’ first or say You can say ‘Have a nice day’ at the end of the show.”
Chung described her firing from CBS in 2005 as “devastating,” but she never sought any sympathy.
“That was not my attitude when I was working,” she said. “I never ran to the women’s room and cried. Because I’ve always believed there’s no crying in baseball.”

Now, she says many women thank her for breaking windows. And some Asian American parents even named their daughter Connie after her.
