“This is the case with Elon. Musk is trying to influence the federal elections,” German government spokesman Christian Hoffmann told reporters at a news conference on Monday.

Musk doubled down on his endorsement in an op-ed published in Germany’s center-right newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

“The portrayal of AfD as a right-wing extremist group is patently false. Considering that party leader Alice Weidel has a same-sex couple from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Musk said of AfD co-chairman Alice Weidel.

He added that in his view, AfD “can lead the country to a future of economic prosperity. cultural integrity And technological innovation is not just a wish. But it’s true.”

These remarks sparked criticism from US lawmakers. both present and past and from leaders in Berlin which pays tribute to the party’s reputation as a neo-Nazi group.

Karl Lauterbach, German Minister of Health And members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) criticized Musk’s intervention, saying “It’s very dishonorable and very problematic.”
