Lisa Kudrow fears an uncertain future as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in Hollywood.
During a recent appearance on the “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” podcast, she discussed the latest film “Here,” directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom. Hanks and Robin Wright, the film uses AI to allow stars to play the same characters from adolescence to old age.
“They shot it. And they were able to really shoot that scene. Then look at their play as children. And it was ready for them to see,” Kudrow said.
She continued: “And all I got from that was that this is an endorsement for AI, and oh my god, it’s not like, ‘Oh, it’s going to destroy everything,’ but what’s left? Forget about the actors- and the new actors? They will just license and recycle.”

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
Kudrow is also concerned about AI’s impact outside of the entertainment industry.
“Stop messing around. What kind of work will people have? And what? There will be a living wage for people without having to work, and how will that be enough?”
Hanks confirmed the use of AI in the film last month. When he appeared on the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend”
“You go scan the data. It then matches all of my photos. And they went back and found photos of me when I was 17, 18, 19, all the same . Are you ready? Scary words. They use AI to do all the work and make it happen faster,” he said.

The “Forrest Gump” star continued, “We will have two monitors while we are filming. One monitor is exactly how we look at it. And another screen with a lag time of about a nanosecond means we’re in deep fake technology. So on one screen, I’m 67 years old, pretending to be in high school, and on the other screen, I’m 17 years old.”
Hanks isn’t too worried about AI, saying it’s “just a moviemaking tool.”
“It’s not like, ‘Oh, it’s going to destroy everything,’ but what’s left?”
He noted that in working like that seen in “Here,” playing characters of different ages. “We still had hours of makeup previews. Because we need wigs and hair.”
Instead of the motion capture points often seen on actors’ faces in background images, Hanks revealed that the technology used in “here” can use “the pores on your face to match that.”

The Oscar winner also noted another effect AI had on their performance.
“Because we have to look at the timing of it and things like that, there’s a factor . . . We think we’re speaking with a very realistic cadence. Then we will go watch the play and It’s as slow as molasses,” he explains.
“These are all filmmaking tools.”
The “Captain Phillips” star added: “It doesn’t make it any more fun to sit back and watch us all dress up the same way.”
