An unidentified gunman approached UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. From behind Wednesday morning and opened fire outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan, then disappeared on the streets of the Big Apple, sparking a massive manhunt.
Authorities have not revealed a motive. But after the bullets were shelled at the scene, the words “reject,” “discharge” and “protect” were found written on it. Around 6:14 a.m.: Before the attack, the NYPD recovered surveillance video from a coffee shop in Midtown that showed the suspect wearing a mask. And surveillance video from outside Stage Star Deli near the corner of 55th Street and Sixth Avenue shows him walking past several times in the minutes that followed.
Around 6.40 a.m.: Surveillance video outside the hotel captured the ambush.
The footage shows a masked man waiting outside the venue, stepping behind Thompson. who was approaching from another hotel across the street and shot him from behind It enters the leg through the back and through the chest.
The police arrived in less than three minutes. But the suspect has since fled. Thompson, a Minnesota native, was in New York to attend a work-related conference. unconscious and unresponsive, according to the NYPD, he was rushed to the hospital where he died.

The camera shows the killer’s path leading away from the crime scene. He dropped the phone in an alley between 54th and 55th streets, where officials are examining fingerprints and other clues. He turned up onto Avenue of the Americas, got on his bike and headed north toward Central Park when he came out of the park. He was not wearing the backpack seen in the previous surveillance video.
Around 7 a.m.: The video shows a man who appears to match the gunman’s description riding a bicycle on the Upper West Side. It was more than 30 blocks from the scene and on the other side of Central Park. He was no longer wearing the backpack captured on earlier surveillance video.
Police were searching the park for evidence Friday morning.
