“A flurry of activity occurred over the weekend of December 28-29 as the active region and the (sun)spot cluster became unstable,” NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported.

The tracker on NOAA’s website says it “shows a ‘line of view’ that represents the southernmost location where you may see the aurora borealis on the northern horizon.”

Alaska, Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine are all possible to see spectacular light shows.

“Aim to find a place with minimal tree lines or hills. to have a full view of the northern horizon,” Fox News previously reported.

“The best auroras are usually within the hour or two of midnight (between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time),” according to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

“There may be aurora borealis in the evening and morning. But they are usually not energetic. Therefore, it is not attractive to the eye.”

Geomagnetic activity

“A Category 3 out of 5 geomagnetic storm is possible on Tuesday and a minor Category 1 storm is expected on New Year’s Day. However, space weather forecasters are considering upgrading their watch to Category 2,” FOX Weather reported.
