New Yorkers enjoyed a rare whale sighting on Monday. After discovering a whale swimming under the Brooklyn Bridge
United States Coast Guard Gothamist confirmed the sighting on Tuesday. At the time, the Coast Guard could not confirm whether the whale was a humpback or an endangered North Atlantic right whale.
Humpback whale sightings are more common. This summer, though, more than 80 North Atlantic right whales have been sighted off the coast of Long Island.
Images obtained by Fox News show a whale spewing out of a blowhole under the historic bridge at sunset. Viewers can also be heard gasping in the video.

“oh! Did you see that?” one viewer said.
Whales have been reported swimming along the East River and have also been seen near the Manhattan Bridge.

Gotham Whale, an organization that tracks marine life in the New York City area, told Fox News Digital that the sighting was “A rather unusual event.”

“It is not clear whether the whales are still in the area.[in New York City]or not,” Danielle Brown, director of research at Gotham Whale, told Fox News Digital. “Because of the busy holiday travel It is very likely that whales are still in the area today. But no report has been received.”
Brown also estimates that there are dozens of humpback whales swimming off the coasts of New York and New Jersey.

In an unrelated matter, Gotham Whale also noted that two humpback whales were seen near Spring Lake, New Jersey, on Sunday. The mother and calf were seen swimming in only 30 feet of water and were seen near a fishing boat.

“Most calves are weaned and prepared to be separated from their mothers at this time of year. Therefore, it is a vulnerable time for them,” the organization advised in a Facebook post. “Please watch out for this little whale as he learns to eat!”
“Always maintain at least 100 feet from whales, but give mother and calf additional space!”

It’s not uncommon to see dead humpback whales wash up near New York City. Between December 2022 and February 2023, 13 dead whales were identified near the coasts of New York and New Jersey.
