GOP SENATOR Introduces Bill to Abolish the Department of Education, Fulfilling Trump Campaign Promise

He added that the state should have complete control over education.

Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters in November supported Abolishing the federal department and sending a memo to state schools to prepare for that possibility.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma Republicans are considering dissolving the Department of Education. One GOP lawmaker wants to ensure that federal money continues to go to state and local schools.

“My problem is If you can do that How do you implement it?” said Rep. Frank Lucas. “Oklahoma is the primary funder of public schools. Local property taxes are an important component. But federal dollars are also important.”

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., told The Oklahoman that he aims to abolish ED but that some federal funding is needed; Specifically, Federal Impact Aid.

“If you are fired from the Ministry of Education I’m not eliminating Impact Aid because that’s tens of millions of dollars for schools in Oklahoma educating children. These won’t be here. But for that,” he said, “I agree with the president about the education bureaucracy. It’s bloated and, frankly, it has the wrong attitude on policy. What they are doing… But really, I don’t see where you can get 60 votes in the Senate.”
