Gary Leff, a Virginia-based travel industry expert and author of the “View From the Wing” blog, told Fox News Digital in an email that people who hold a seat on their boarding pass are entitled to that seat.

“(Pilots) may not be able to get what they want from the airline when making a reservation. Or the airline might want a fee for a preferred seat and the passenger doesn’t want to pay — so they’ll try their luck, the committee said.
One traveler shared their experience on Reddit in the “r/delta” forum with the caption “My First Class Seat Squatter.”

“After the boarding gate closed A representative approached me and informed me that no one was showing up. So they got a free first class seat (3A) for me. Score,” the user posted.
The user continued: “I noticed a woman in the seat. I think the computer was wrong and the person who originally reserved the seat was already on the plane. I approached the receptionist to double check. And she confirmed that 3A is now assigned to me.”
“This woman just saw an open seat in first class. And I thought she was going to see if she could come out and sit there,” the user said.

The Redditor went on to say that the woman ordered a beer while sitting in her seat. which was later sent to her (the rightful owner of the seat) and she “drank with joy.”
On the “r/unitedairlines” forum, another pilot shared a post that ran in with “Squatting person”

“During my flight, a large group of FAs (flight attendants) approached the woman sitting across from me. She apparently snuck into the seats within a couple of hours and the main FA only just found out,” Raider.
Users of the comments section responded that “I would be so ashamed to be caught doing something like this in the confined space of a plane during a long trip,” one user said.
“Ah, the thought of having to face each other like that makes me nervous haha,” another person added.

The Redditor went on to share that they thought the seats were reserved at the last minute. And he didn’t suspect anything until the flight attendant approached the pilot.

“When the FA comes back She asked my neighbor’s name again. and shouted to them that they were 10 rows ahead from where they were supposed to be,” the post said.

The user continued by writing, “The FA paused for a moment before telling them ‘Ah, you can stay there’ and walking away. After all the lies and gestures given by my neighbors, the FA did not move them to their seats.”
