President Biden commuted the prison sentences of nearly 1,500 people and granted 39 pardons, the largest single-day clemency in modern history. The White House made the announcement Thursday morning.
The sentences were commuted for inmates who were confined to their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic and who “successfully reintegrated into their families and communities,” according to the announcement.
Thirty-nine of the people who received pardons were convicted of nonviolent crimes.
“The president has issued more commutations of sentences at this point in his presidency than any previous officeholder. in the same first term,” the White House said.
The move comes as the president faces bipartisan scrutiny over pardoning his son, Hunter, from criminal charges and tax charges.
