“He asked me if I wanted to play and if I wanted to go, I said I wouldn’t be too interested in it on Sunday. When I fell asleep it was like an opportunity to plant my name. Football history I may not get that opportunity again. So I’m disappointed. But in the end I don’t care if we put the team at risk or not,” Barkley said.

Barkley said he also told his family about the situation. And they wanted him to break even more records than he did.

“Obviously I told my family. My family probably needs it a little more than I do,” Barkley said.

Barkley, who has 2,005 rushing yards this year, surpasses Eric’s record. Dickerson’s most rushing yards in a single season were 100 yards. Dickerson broke the record with 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984.

In 1984, Dickerson topped 100 rushing yards on 12 carries to break OJ Simpson’s 1973 record with Buffalo rushing for 2,003 yards in a single season. Dickerson needs 379 carries to set the record. Barkley, on the other hand, has 345 carries this season.

Barkley signed a three-year deal with the Eagles with $26 million guaranteed and $37.75 million overall, making him the highest-paid running back in franchise history.
