Top GOP rebel angle for committee positions backed by powerful House leaders


Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas is moving forward as a contender to become the next chair of the House Rules Committee. This is an influential committee that serves as the final gatekeeper for most bills before they receive a vote across the House.

“I will defer to speaker on this,” Roy said when asked about the chairmanship on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast this week. “I obviously put my name out there.”

Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, wrote on X that Roy “will build the conservative coalition in the House needed to support President Trump’s priorities as Rules Committee chairman.”

But it is different from other committees. The president is elected by a broad group of members of the legislature. Only the Speaker of the House is nominated to the House Rules Review Panel.

“I think it is important to have a chairman of the rules. Whoever it is will support the leadership,” one anonymous GOP lawmaker spoke freely about Roy’s bid.

“The speaker has to get his agenda passed, one way or another. and whoever he appoints to do so That would be the deal. Because he can remove the agenda and then replace it.”
