Texas Democrats believe President Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Mexico will bring the country to a deal. “So that we can solve the issues around immigration and fentanyl.”

“If it means a 25 percent tax to fix the border, Would you be happy?” Cuellar was asked.
“Let me put it this way: Laredo is the largest port. We handle 40 percent of all trade between the United States and Mexico. I know this is how to negotiate and take advantage. I know Mexico will be at the table,” he replied.

“But no one wants 25 percent tax on them. And the Mexicans threatened to do the same. And we don’t want to get involved in that,” Cuellar added. “But I think this will definitely put Mexico in a difficult position. So that we can solve the issues around immigration and fentanyl.”
Trump pledged to impose tariffs on Mexico when he returned to the White House in January.
“As everyone knows, Thousands of people streamed across Mexico and Canada. It has brought crime and drugs to levels never seen before,” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social. “Now there is a caravan coming in from Mexico consisting of thousands of people. It seems unstoppable in the mission to pass our current open border.”
“On January 20, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States from Mexico and Canada and a zero-tolerance Open Borders. Essentially, this tax will continue to be in effect. Until it’s time for drugs. especially fentanyl And stop all illegal aliens from invading our country!” Trump continued.
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and authority to easily resolve these long-simmering issues,” he said. “We urge them to use this power. And until then It’s time for them to pay the hefty price!”
