Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said her members are indifferent to the prospect of the Department of Education being abolished.
In an interview with MSNBC on Sunday, Leaders of the second-largest teachers union in the country were asked to respond to President Donald Trump’s nomination of WWE co-founder Linda McMahon to lead the Department of Education.
“My members really don’t care. whether they would have a bureaucracy at the Ministry of Education,” Weingarten said. “In fact, Al Shanker and the AFT in the 1970s were opposed to its creation. We think it should be within HEW (Department of Health, Education and Welfare) because of all the children.”

While Weingarten is indifferent to abolishing ED, she emphasizes the need for schools to have federal funding.
“Look at Round’s bill, all he’s done is get rid of money for poor kids, what are you going to do? We need federal money to increase opportunities for kids,” Weingarten said.

Corey DeAngelis, senior fellow at the American Culture Project, told Fox News Digital that Weingarten may have “misread the bill.”
“Maybe she misread the bill. It sends money back to states in the form of Block Grants to be used for education,” he said. “Even a broken clock is correct twice a day. I’m glad Randi Weingarten and I agree. In one matter That is, it is time to clean up the bureaucratic mess that is the Ministry of Education.”
He continued, “If even Randi Weingarten were open to this idea. Hopefully some Democrats in Congress will join the majority party. The Ministry of Education is an unconstitutional waste of time and money. Let’s get rid of bureaucracy and deliver education. Return to the states That will eliminate waste and allow for more local control.”

Trump signaled during the campaign that he supported abolishing the department. He said he would prioritize. “Closing the Department of General Education” in Washington, D.C.and return all necessary academic and educational work back to the state.”
