The New York Jets have brought in a familiar face to help them in their search for a general manager and head coach. But it was a move that baffled some because it was a former executive the organization fired several years ago.

Jets owner Woody Johnson will reportedly oversee the search in which the 33rd team will be involved, as will other Jets executives who will remain in the front office.
Tannenbaum and former Vikings GM Rick Spielman will be the “main representatives” of the 33rd team, according to the Post, and the latter had a say in selecting the GM and coach last season for the Washington Commanders.
The commissioner appears to be in a great spot after making hires ahead of the 2024 campaign, bringing on Adams Peters as GM and Dan Quinn as the new head coach. Washington is currently in the playoff hunt in the NFC.

Spielman, though, helped one organization last season. Tannenbaum was also someone who knew what Johnson was looking for personally. He was the Jets’ general manager from 2006 to 2012 and oversaw the team’s roster during its final trip to the playoffs.
Tannenbaum was responsible for drafting Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and other Jets leading up to those playoff seasons.
However, Tannenbaum’s 15-year tenure with the Jets ended after the team missed the playoffs for a second straight season in 2012, and some on social media couldn’t understand why New York had someone they fired more than a decade ago. Let’s help them now.
One thought Tannenbaum would “end up hiring himself,” one X user said.
“This is the stupidity of Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets,” another user He was below average at best with a 57-55 record as Jets GM.”
When Tannenbaum returned to help the Jets, some even suggested the team bring the band back together by hiring Rex Ryan, with Tannenbaum returning to GM. Ryan mentioned on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” that he had “a business that still doesn’t exist.” Not done with that franchise.”
Since leaving the Jets, Tannenbaum served as executive vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins before joining ESPN as an analyst.

The Jets have hired three GMs since Tannenbaum’s departure: John Izdik, Mike Macaggnan and Douglas, all of whom have been unable to put together a roster to end the team’s playoff drought.
